“What’s the best exercise I should be doing for…” fill in the blank.
This is one of the questions I get asked most often. It might be, “What’s the best exercise I should do to get my thighs smaller?”. Or “what should I do to get rid of my love handles?” Or any other problem area my client has. Of course, I’m going to stress the importance of getting your diet together first, but having that desire to actively do something about their level of physical fitness should be encouraged as well. And when it all comes down to it, there’s only one exercise you should be doing.
It’s the exercise that you’re gonna want to do.
I can tell someone that the best exercise is the kettlebell swing, but if they don’t like the looks of it, they’re not gonna pick it up. One of my favorite cardio activities is Turbo Kick Boxing, I even taught if for a few years. I can talk about how much fun I had and how it feels like I’m playing and not even exercising, but for other people it’s torture.
Here are 6 examples of creative exercises that are based on the idea that you’re going to live a healthy lifestyle and take care of your problem areas by moving in the ways that you personally want to move.
1. Fat Girl Dancing
(This is actually the name of her series on YouTube)
I love this girl! Her name is Whitney Thore and she has a truly inspirational story. She was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) which caused her to gain 100 lbs and lead her to a severe bout of depression. She is now the founder of the “No Body Shame Campaign” which is quickly spreading. Whitney has such a positive, joyful attitude towards life that shines through in all she does. She knows she’s not where she should be physically, but that doesn’t stop her from doing the exercise she loves the most and enjoying the journey of changing herself from the inside out. Rock it, girl!
2. Hot Hula
I was actually in that class 4 years ago when Hot Hula Fitness debuted at 24 Hour Fitness in Irvine, California. I was so awkward and uncoordinated, but I loved it! I really enjoyed that feeling of doing something completely out of my element. Don’t let the video fool you, Hot Hula is pretty intense and focuses mostly on your core and legs. If you’re looking for a creative, fun workout in the privacy of your own home, check out Anna-Rita’s Hot Hula Fitness DVDs.
You can’t get much better than that….getting in your workout and spending time with your kids…way to multi-task!
4. Animal Flow
Every time I see this video, it becomes my life goal for about 3 minutes. Animal Flow looks like a super intense workout where capoiera meets parkour and break dancing. On the plus side, you don’t need any equipment and it uses all major muscle groups for increased calorie burn and building lean muscle.
5. Treadmill Creativity
Now that’s taking a boring treadmill workout up a notch! That guy’s got amazing salsa skills. I could just see him around his house, cooking, cleaning….burning calories with a smile on his face, no music needed!
6. Baby Surfing
Ok, so the point is to find something that you genuinely love to do physically. Then do it with all the joy you can. It will never seem like a tedious workout that you have to get through. It’s just living your beautiful life.
